As you drive your diesel car or truck, the soot generated by engine combustion gets trapped by the diesel particulate filter; the DPF has the in-built function of burning off the accumulated soot and turning it into ash when the exhaust gasses are hot enough - this is called passive DPF regeneration. 

However, the gasses may not get hot enough to oxidise the soot and turn it into ash in stop-and-go situations, disabling passive regeneration and, ultimately, clogging up your DPF. After you have replaced your old DPF filter, it is beneficial to think of your driving habits - plan to intersperse short rides with longer ones on the highway to keep your new filter clean and high-functioning for years.
